A/Prof Dave Hawkes leads the molecular microbiology laboratory at VCS Pathology/the Australian Centre for the Prevention of Cervical Cancer. His work has been instrumental in providing the evidence-base for the introduction of self-collection into the HPV-based cervical screening program and he has been an active member on several advisory committee covering the implementation and safety of the new National Cervical Screening Program.
Dave regularly provides CPD-accredited clinical education to general practices, with a focus on explaining the accuracy of the HPV self-collection option, and the associated clinical pathways.
He is a molecular virologist who undertook his PhD on HIV at the Burnet Institute and has worked in a range of areas of virology and currently holds honorary positions at the University of Melbourne and the University of Malaya in Malaysia.
