VCS Pathology

A specialist laboratory committed to providing excellence in cervical cytology, histopathology, and HPV testing.

VCS Pathology is Australia’s largest not-for-profit cervical screening laboratory and continues to report almost half of all cervical screening tests in Victoria. Our commitment to gynaecological health includes HPV testing, cervical cytology, histopathology, Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoea testing.

As leaders in self-collected HPV tests, VCS Pathology was the first laboratory in Australia to be accredited by the National Association of Testing Authorities (NATA). This enables us to process self-collected HPV samples as part of the renewed National Cervical Screening Program.

In 2020, ACPCC launched the Home-Based HPV Self-Collection initiative. The initiative assisted clinicians to encourage and support under-screened people to participate in cervical screening during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Supporting Australia’s National Cervical Screening Program, VCS Pathology provides quality laboratory services and advice to health practitioners.

Our clinical education unit offers accredited training, education materials and phone support via specialist Liaison Physicians with access to a team of anatomical pathologists, clinical microbiologists, cytologists and specialist molecular scientists who have extensive expertise in the full range of testing involved in the cervical screening pathway.

We are also accredited to test for influenza and other respiratory viruses, including Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2). This accreditation was gained in 2020 to support the Victorian Government response to the pandemic.

During the Victorian coronavirus outbreaks, VCS Pathology managed a throughput of up to 2,500 COVID tests per day. Importantly, most results were provided within 24 hours. We also continued to maintain the very high quality of our primary cervical screening laboratory functions during this time.

VCS Pathology is committed to meeting all relevant industry standards including ISO15189, National Pathology Accreditation Advisory Council (NPAAC) requirements, the Royal College of Pathologists Australasia (RCPA) and ACPCC insurance agencies.
