Campaign Background

In recent years, the National Cervical Screening Program has seen substantial transformations, notably with the implementation of universal access to HPV self-collection. This method stands out as one of our most effective tools for enhancing screening participation and advancing toward the equitable elimination of cervical cancer in Australia. A nationwide campaign advocating for the option of self-collection will launch later in 2024, ensuring everyone is prepared to make informed choices. Make sure you are ready!

Title:

One Test, Two Choices: How empowering your patients can result in more equitable cervical screening

Body text:

More than 70% of cervical cancer cases in Australia occur in people who have never been screened or are overdue, making under-screening the main risk factor.

Did you know that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women and people with a cervix, as well as those from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) backgrounds, are among under-screened groups, placing them at an increased risk of cancer?

In an effort to address disparities, an Australian Government funded national campaign is set to launch to these audiences in September, promoting the option to self-collect. This campaign , will likely result in an increase in patient demand. Are YOU ready?

Self-collection is just as sensitive for the detection of HPV and CIN2+/adenocarcinoma in situ as a clinician-collected sample and can help overcome screening barriers (e.g., privacy/modesty concerns, fears of discomfort and pain, previous trauma, etc.). Therefore, self-collection can help engage those who would otherwise not participate in screening—but only if they are provided with the option to do so.

As a healthcare provider, you have a key role in cervical cancer elimination through offering your patients an informed choice between the two testing methods. You can offer self-collection to all of your routine (asymptomatic) cervical screening patients.

To prepare you for the forthcoming patient-facing campaign, the Australian Government has funded the Australian Centre for the Prevention of Cervical Cancer to raise awareness and educate healthcare providers about self-collection. To get up to speed, you can visit the ACPCC website to find webinars, podcasts, provider resources, and other CPD opportunities. The ACPCC also houses how-to guides for patients in 20 different languages. Lastly, make sure to contact your laboratory to ensure you have the correct swabs and instructions to offer self-collection.

Dear members,

A new Australian Government funded national cervical screening campaign is commencing in September – the first of its magnitude in over 20 years – and is likely to increase patient demand for the HPV self-collection option.
In advance of this patient-facing campaign, the Australian Government Department of Health and Aged Care has funded the Australian Centre for the Prevention of Cervical Cancer to undertake a nationwide healthcare provider awareness campaign, ‘HPV Self-Collection: Are YOU ready to support the choice?’. The materials for this campaign were developed in partnership with The National Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation (NACCHO) and the Australian Multicultural Health Collaborative (AMHC)The campaign aims to encourage healthcare providers to ensure their practices are ready to offer the HPV self-collection option to all who are eligible in advance of the patient-facing campaign.

HPV self-collection allows screening participants to take their own vaginal sample for HPV testing. It is just as sensitive for the detection of CIN2+, adenocarcinoma in situ, and oncogenic HPV as a clinician-collected cervical screening test via a speculum examination and is available as an option for all routine (asymptomatic) participants in the National Cervical Screening Program. Self-collection is one of the best tools we have available to increase cervical screening participation, address disparities in screening, and keep us on track to eliminate cervical cancer in Australia by 2035.

You can sign up for a webinar about self-collection here. Find resources CPD online learning modules, videos, and information on how to support under-screened groups at www.acpcc.org.au/self-collection-campaign.
