Professor Andrew Vallely is a clinical epidemiologist at the Kirby Institute UNSW Sydney, and the PNG Institute of Medical Research (PNGIMR), Goroka. Andrew has led multi-disciplinary collaborative research teams in low- and middle-income countries for more than 25 years in the epidemiology and prevention of HIV, sexually transmitted and other infectious diseases, working in Kenya, Tanzania, Myanmar, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, and Vanuatu. In 2007, he established an international collaborative research group in sexual and reproductive health at the PNGIMR, where he was Head of the Sexual and Reproductive Health Unit and Deputy Director from 2010-15. His research focusses on evaluating innovative solutions to improve women’s reproductive health in high-burden settings; and in the last decade has led the search for effective, scalable, and cost-effective same-day HPV testing and treatment strategies for cervical screening in PNG and other low-resource countries in our region. On behalf of the C4 CRE Andrew is jointly leading a major new initiative on cervical cancer elimination in the Western Pacific supported by a landmark $8.1 million investment from the Minderoo Foundation. This investment will join forces with the Asia Development Bank, industry biotechnology partner Cepheid, and the Frazer Family Foundation, with in-kind contributions from the governments of PNG and Vanuatu, to provide almost $30 million for the program in Papua New Guinea and Vanuatu.
