Sharon Hanley is a cancer epidemiologist and Senior Lecturer at Hokkaido University Centre for Environmental and Health Sciences. She obtained her PhD. from the Departments of Public Health Medicine and Reproductive Endocrinology and Oncology at Hokkaido University. Sharon has an outstanding record of public health leadership in both cervical cancer screening and HPV vaccination. She sits on several national and international steering groups for cervical cancer control, including the Japan Cancer Society’s working group for HPV Self-sampling and the COVID-19 and Cancer Global Modelling Consortium. Sharon has been invited to speak on HPV vaccine hesitancy at over 50 inter/national meetings and has provided consultation on HPV vaccine safety to public health professionals in countries facing issues similar to Japan regarding HPV vaccine hesitancy. Sharon is passionate about equity in public health outcomes and as a volunteer for Sapporo English Medical Interpreters group, she uses her proficiency in Japanese to help non-Japanese citizens access local cervical screening and childhood immunization programmes.
