Dr. Kanan Desai is an MD, MPH with around ten years of experience in epidemiology and public health in developing countries. She is currently working as a staff scientist at the US National Cancer Institute. Her work focuses on developing new cervical cancer screening technologies that are affordable, scalable, and sustainable in low-resource settings. She is helping to develop and evaluate a strategy combining self-sampling for HPV testing with isothermal-amplification-based extended genotyping and deep-learning-based automated visual evaluation (AVE) of cervical images as a clinical test for risk-based management. She has led large-scale community-based field studies on cervical cancer screening in Nigeria and India in her current role. She has previously worked in India with UNICEF and the Ministry of Health (MOH) on health system strengthening projects regarding reproductive and child health issues.
