Dr Machalek is an epidemiologist and Senior Research Fellow at the Kirby Institute, University of New South Wales. Her research focuses on the prevention of human papillomavirus (HPV) and covers a wide range of projects. This includes developing and implementing public health surveillance systems in Australia and internationally and evaluating vaccination and screening strategies for preventing HPV and related diseases. Since 2014, Dr Machalek has led the development and implementation of a National HPV Monitoring Program that is evaluating the long-term impact of Australia’s HPV vaccination program on HPV infections in Australia. She is also an investigator on a world-first project that is measuring the impact of reduced HPV vaccine dose schedules in South African adolescent girls.
