Communique from the Expert Advisory Group for the Elimination Response

The third meeting of the Expert Advisory Group for the Elimination Response (EAGER) was held on 12 September 2022 via videoconference.

The discussion focused on:

  • The key consultation findings
  • The proposed structure, strategic priorities and actions of the draft National Cervical Cancer Elimination Strategy

MEETING OUTCOMES

EAGER members received a project update from Prof Marion Saville, Executive Director of the Australian Centre for the Prevention of Cervical Cancer (ACPCC). Public consultation occurred between May and July 2022, the consultation data was analysed (by ACPCC and the University of Melbourne) and is now informing the drafting of the Strategy. Prof Marion Saville also thanked the EAGER members for their support throughout the consultation.

Dr Claire Nightingale, Senior Research Fellow from the University of Melbourne, presented the consultation findings. EAGER members congratulated the analysis team for producing a clear and comprehensive report.

Prof Saville provided an overview of the structure of the draft Strategy. Chairs of all Sub-Advisory Groups (Prof Julia Brotherton, Vaccination; A/Prof Megan Smith, Screening; Dr Pearly Khaw, Deputy Chair, Treatment; and, A/Prof Lisa Whop, Health Equity) presented the draft strategic priorities and actions for each cervical cancer elimination pillar, individual reflections, and feedback from Sub-Advisory Group members.

The EAGER provided input on the development of the draft Strategy, including timelines and targets, equity considerations and specific feedback on the strategic priorities and actions of each pillar.

NEXT STEPS

The National Elimination Project team will continue progressing the development of the Strategy under the guidance of the EAGER and Sub-Advisory Groups, with a draft available for public release in late 2022.

The next EAGER meeting is scheduled for February 2023.
